Despite the pastoral appeal of the rural setting of this beautiful converted dairy barn, the owner felt exposed to the road and was unsatisfied with her home’s outdoor spaces. A majestic, mature maple tree was a lovely focal point, but the dense shade created a barren area underneath.

Christine Krause Design Studio set out to turn the barren area surrounding the owner’s maple into a cohesive entertainment area, reimagine the planting scheme, and create a new driveway that would imbue the property with a much needed sense of privacy. The new bluestone terrace and field stone seating wall provide gathering area for friends and family. Native sedges planted around the roots for protection and to preserve the health of the maple tree. The driveway’s new configuration and extension of the existing fence provide the privacy the client desired. The new gate leads to the portion of the property across the street, which is now a lovely native meadow with walking paths.

The existing plant material was repurposed into a cutting garden outside of the owner’s office barn. The new gardens consist of a simplified palette of flowing masses of grasses, butterfly bush, hydrangeas, lady’s mantle, viburnum, and oak leaf hydrangea. The thoughtful landscape master plan reimagines the space around the Maple creates new garden rooms, and provides a fresh planting scheme for seasonal, timeless enjoyment.
