Mill Valley, CA

CKDS collaborated closely with the architect and interior designer on this complete interior and exterior renovation in the Strawberry area of Mill Valley to create an exciting exploration of the interplay of architecture, interior and garden.

The only remaining parts of the original outdoor space are the two mature Mayten trees in the front courtyard. As you enter the new courtyard oasis, you are greeted by a calming sound created by the bespoke water feature. The custom fence allows for sunlight to enter, whilst blocking out the wind. The sophisticated layers and play of light created in this space also carry through at night, when the space comes alive with carefully lit trees. Terraces and pathways are made up of a simple palette of pea stone and concrete, enhancing the clean lines of the house's architecture. Contemporary materials are balanced by the softer plantings of grasses and evergreens.

In the rear garden, a floating deck was designed to create a sense of being directly above the water whilst taking in the breathtaking views of Richardson Bay and the San Francisco skyline. A fire table on the second deck provides a relaxing seating area and allows for enjoyment of the garden on cool Marin evenings. The new decks are made of sustainable bamboo decking. Several of the plants were chosen for their loose form that will move with the breezes off of the water.
