Design Philosophy

I believe it is necessary to have a connection between people and the natural environment. Underlying all of my designs is a conscientious sensitivity to the existing environment, or "sense of place."

My approach begins with a focus on the overall feel of the site created by the architecture, geography, history, existing plant life, and specific features of the location. The result is a sensitive integration of location and buildings, while balancing practicalities and aesthetics.

Design Process

The design process involves a deliberate concentration on the connection of spaces to produce a seamless melding of the interior and exterior.

It is important to me to find out what matters to my clients in their life and express this in their landscapes and in their gardens. Each project is vested with the unique vision of the owner. Good communication is an essential element in the process. It is why I focus my initial work on really listening to a client's wishes and drawing out of them their dreams for their property.

I welcome the opportunity to collaborate with architects from the initial design phase through completion of the project. I believe that this is the best way to achieve a successful connection between buildings and their environment.

Planting

My aim is to create beautiful, yet interesting and functional outside spaces, which incorporate sustainable planting for all seasons.

Plants are chosen for their suitability to the environment. I chose regionally specific, native plant material where appropriate.

Color, texture, form, foliage, and scent are all given careful consideration. The results are a natural but tamed appearance. I allow for the landscape to dictate the style.

Hardscaping

I concentrate on a sophisticated merging of ingenuity, harmony, and functionality in the design intention. The focus is on simply designed and site specific use of the space to allow for a dialogue between the transitional spaces. Materials are chosen to complement the existing architecture and local characteristics.
